Stopped smoking

by Ian
(Lancashire )

In Jan 2015, aged 58, I had been a smoker for 45 years. I stopped and thought running might be good motivation to stay "stopped". I'd never ran previously and it was a struggle to start with. Parkrun helped and I gradually built up speed and distance.

I now run an average of around 25 miles per week, and completed my first marathon a day or two before my 60th birthday. I've another couple of marathons later this year too. Needless to say, I've stayed "stopped".

I'd recommend running to anyone - if I can do it, anyone can !

Well done Ian!

Ian, many congratulations for giving up smoking after so long. I used to be a smoker and I know how hard it can be to give up.
Well done on your first marathon too as not many people have done a marathon let alone when they are turning 60.
Best of luck with your next two marathons and it would be great if you can do a follow up post and let us know how you can get on :).
